Grid & Supply Chain Infrastructure

Offshore wind is dependent upon this infrastructure being in place at competitive cost and able to offtake energy with priority.

This include supply chain infrastructure that needs to be accommodate both the offshore wind sector while also benefitting locally. The offshore wind sector is also challenged by the sheer size and weight of the components and few adequate production sites exist for offshore turbines, towers and blades. Suitable sites are most often found near harbour facilities while at the same time having good access points with adequate infrastructure. Challenges in this regard have not become fewer over the last years with turbine sizes rapidly increasing.

Adding decentralized power generation like offshore wind will require a lot of additional constructing transmission assets and new infrastructure, which needs to follow the buildout of offshore wind organically. For modern offshore wind farms, grid transmission typically make up some 20-25% of the total cost of offshore wind energy today. Hence, building sufficient grid infrastructure and supply chain is key for a well-functioning offshore wind sector in India that can both plan, produce and operate offshore wind farms in an efficient manner.
