Centre of Excellence for Offshore Wind and Renewable Energy represented at “India Energy Week”.
India Energy Week 2023 took place in Bengaluru from 6-8 February. This inaugural event comes at a critical time, with the challenges of energy security and environmental sustainability impacting long-term energy transition and paths towards decarbonisation.
The Centre of Excellence for Offshore Wind and Renewable Energy was well represented at the event, moderating a dedicated session on offshore wind on day two. The session, entitled “Fostering a thriving offshore wind sector”, explored the opportunities to accelerate offshore wind growth, as well as the limitations and barriers in this space.
Proceedings were opened with a welcome address by the Joint Secretary from MNRE, Mr Lalit Bohra, followed by a keynote address by His Excellency Freddy Svane, Ambassador of Denmark to India. The CoE’s Head of Secretariat Mr. Alp Günsever then moderated a lively panel discussion with participants representing both the public and private sector, including MNRE and NIWE.
Topics deliberated upon ranged from the relevance of offshore wind for India, the progress made so far by MNRE and NIWE on offshore wind regulation development, the role and expectancies of local governments and communities, as well as the direction that offshore wind developers would like to see the market develop. Risks and opportunities were also discussed in addition to the expected time plan for the first offshore wind tender in India.
MNRE is planning to release finalized tender documents at the beginning of March 2023.
